LIFE INSURANCE YOU DON’T HAVE TO DIE TO USE
Living Benefit Riders
Many current life insurance carriers offer living benefit riders on their policies. These living benefits will provide you with access to your death benefit if you suffer a chronic illness, critical illness or you are terminally ill. Often a “Chronic Illness” is defined as unable to perform 2 out of 6 activities of daily living for example; bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, toileting, continence or you are cognitively impaired. A “Critical Illness” is usually defined as heart attack, stroke, cancer, heart valve replacement, blindness, etc….. .”Terminally Ill” is usually defined as having 12 months or less to live. The living benefits can be used for any purpose, including but not limited to paying for treatment, care providers, mortgage payments, outstanding bills etc.… . While these riders are usually on permanent or cash value life policies some carriers are now offering these benefits on “Term” Life Insurance policies.

Cash Value
Most permanent Life Insurance policies build “cash value” that can be accessed “tax free” through the use of withdrawals and policy loans. This cash value is often used to provide funding for college tuition or retirement income but can be used any purpose.
